NOW I AM KNOWN – Peter Mutabazi Book Cover

Covid had just started and I was basically out of work. The World had shut down. I received a cold call about doing photography work. They mentioned foster care and it sparked my interest. I had no idea what journey this phone call would lead me on.

I showed up to Peter‘s house for our first shoot. See, Peter just does not foster one child. He always has a house full. The chaos of a house full of kids did not phase me. Trust me, my two little cherub 👼 angels 👯‍♀️ keep me more than occupied. We knocked out the photos and Peter was very happy with the final product and our relationship blossomed. I was there sometimes twice a week.

See, at the time I had no idea Peter was kind of a big deal. A worldwide sensation. His online presence alone was jaw-dropping. Over the next few years we worked on campaigns for Google, Dove men’s care, Febreze, Shell Gasoline, Tylenol, Ritz crackers, Heinz ketchup, Lowes and of course Walmart…. Just to name a few.

I grew attached to his family. And I became very educated in the foster care system. Sometimes children stay for a little and go back to rehabilitated situations. It didn’t make it any easier when I had to say goodbye to them.

November 2021 Peter asked me if I would photograph him in one of the children for his new book (which just hit the shelves) … I was honored. We’re talking about The NY Times, Today show, BCC, etc. The reviews and Accolades were tremendous.

However the most important part of this is Peter’s story. At this point I’d been working with him and his family for over two years. They’ve been to my home for dinner and we have become close. I knew a little bit of his backstory but I’m not one to pry into people’s personal lives or their past. On a recent flight to Birmingham I started reading his epic life story. My jaw dropped, tears came to my eyes. I could not believe what this man had endured and overcome. With abuse starting as a very (very) small child, his escape and subsequent life on the streets of Uganda. I couldn’t believe what I was reading.

If you have the pleasure of meeting Peter, which I hope you do… I don’t know how he does it? You will also meet a seemingly “normal” man. You would never imagine such a stand up person to have traveled out of hell to do such amazing things. Sometimes fostering five children at once, some still in diapers. I juggle a lot but this man deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. Amidst the children and chaos he is always upbeat and optimistic and forever striving for greatness. He is a true inspiration to me as a father.
